a vessel containing melted tin, the surface of which is covered with fat or oil, to defend it from the action of the air; the iron by this means comes in contact with the tin in a perfect metallic state and becomes coated. If a small quantity of iron only is to be coated it is heated and the tin rubbed on with a piece of burberry outlet cloth, or some tow, sprinkling the iron first with some powdered resin for the purpose of reducing the tin that may be oxydated.Of tinning Copper. Sheets of copper are tinned in the same manner as iron. Copper boilers, saucepans, and other kitchen utensils, are tinned after they are made. They are first scoured, next made hot, and the tin is rubbed on with the resin as before directed. For these purposes pure grain tin only should be used, but lead is too often mixed with the burberry sale tin, to adulterate its quality and make it lay on more easily, which practice is highly pernicious.To whiten Br ass or Copper by boiling. Pins and many sorts of buttons are whitened in the following manner.—Put the brass or copper into a pipkin with some white tartar, alum, and grain tin, and boil them together; the articles will soon become tinned, and when polished will look like silver.LACQUERING.Lacquering is the laying either coloured or transparent varnishes on metals, in order to produce the appearance of a different colour on the metal or to preserve it from rust. When brass is to be made to have the appearance of being gilt, lacquer is used; where tin is wanted to have the resemblance of yellow metals, and brass cocks or nails, &c. are to be defended from the action of the air, it is also employed. Burberry Outlet Online For the composition of lacquers the principal substance used is seed-lac; but for coarser purposes a mixture of resin and turpentine, which is much cheaper.A Lacquer for Brass to imitate Gilding. Take of turmeric one' ounce; saffron and Spanish annotto, of each two drachms; highly rectified spirits of wine one pint; put these into a proper bottle in a moderate heat, often shaking them for several days. From this will be obtained a strong yellow tincture, which must be strained through a piece of cloth; after this three ounces of coarsely powdered seed-lac are added, and the mixture placed again in a moderate heat, till the seed-lac is dissolved ; let this tincture be again well strained and stopped close in a bottle. If this lacquer requires to be made redder and warmer the proportion of anotto must be increased, and diminished where it is wanted cooler or nearer to a true yellow. The following lacquer is cheaper than the above, and is not greatly inferior, particularly where th« Spanish annotto cannot be procured good.—Take of the best dragon's blood half a drachm ; turmeric root ground one ounce; spirits of wine one pint, mix them, and proceed as above. This varnish may be rendered of a redder or truer yellow cast by diminishing the proportion of dragon's blood. In this kind of lacquer instead of the turmeric, saffron is sometimes employed to form the bodycolour ; this, though it makes a warmer yellow, is too dear for common use. Aloes and gamboge for brass lacquers are sometimes used ; but where turmeric or saffron is used the aloes are not necessary; the gamboge, though it gives a strong tinge to water, affords a weak one mixed with spirit of wine.A Lacquer for Tin. Take of turmeric root one ounce, of dragon's blood two drachms; proof spirits one pint; add a sufficient quantity of seed-lac.A Lacquer for Locks, £Cc.Seed-lac varnish is either used alone or with a little dragon's blood ; or a compound varnish of equal parts of *eed-lac and resin, with or without the dragon's blood.A Gold-coloured Lacquer for Leather. Gilt leather, so termed, is used for skreens, borders for rooms, &c. ; and is only leather covered with silver-leaf - ' and lacquered with the following composition.—Take of fine white resin and common resin of each four pounds and a half; gum-sandarach two pounds and a half; aloes two pounds; let them be well bruised and mixed together; gently melt the whole over a charcoal fire in an earthenpot, stirring it constantly; add to it when melted, by degrees, seven pints of linseed-oil. This mixture must be made to boil for some time, and near the end of the boiling half an ounce of red lead or litharge is to be added, and finally, strained through a linen or flannel bag. This varnish should be boiled seven or eight hours, but this varies according to circumstances. In order to ascertain when it is sufficiently boiled, try a little on some instrument, if it draws out and is ropy, and sticks to the fingers, it is fit for use.OF BRONZING.Bronzing is colouring by metalline powders, plaster, or other busts and figures, in order to make them appear as if cast of copper or other metals. This is generally done with a cement, which renders it more durable and secure, with the gold powders, and the aurum mosaicum: but the proper bronzing should be of a deeper and redder colour, more resembling copper; and which may be produced by grinding a very small quantity of red lead with these powders ;
